James Cameron says boardgame adaptation "degrades" cinema

Cameron blasted Peter Berg's upcoming big-screen adaptation of the battlehsip boardgame, saying the movie 'degrades the cinema.'

Cameron says just the decision to make the movie reveals how 'desperate' Hollywood has become.

'We have a story crisis,' Cameron says. 'Now they want to make the Battleship game into a film. This is pure desperation.'

The man behind Titanic and Terminator says the problem is that studios today are reluctant to make movies out of anything that isn't already a popular brand.

'Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that a film is a brand before it hit theaters,' he says. 'If a brand has been around, Harry Potter for example, or Spider-Man, you are light years ahead. And there lies the problem. Because unfortunately these franchises are becoming more ridiculous. Battleship. This degrades the cinema.'

This imo is part of the backlash coming from US concerns over a weak economy. The kneejerk reaction was to tighten their belts by sharply curtailing things like running smaller branch film development companies that allowed indie filmakers to make films that were non "branded". Their playing it safe by only going with what they think it a shure bet to make $ and the public is eating it up...why should they change?

Like most things I think it will eventually reach a peak and cycle back to a search for more interesting film ideas, and new IP to grow nto a fresh brands. Along with the other changes perculating in the industry imo it is going to bring oportunities to artists that are now forming solid brands of their own making. Original IPs that will become very desirable when the time comes round.

I've seen this happen way back when a friend had a major film company make a $3 million offer on a series he had in hand, developed and ready to roll into production.

Nobody really knows what will happen, but that's my 2 cents. :p
